Founded by veteran missionaries Raymond and Ruth Miller, the Nazarene Training College (NTC), now known as the Caribbean Nazarene College (CNC), opened its doors on January 3, 1951, with the first student hailing from Guyana (then, British Guiana). Domicile in the Trinidad District of the Church of the Nazarene, our institution extended its reach not only in Trinidad initially, but also to Guyana and Barbados.
Our Story
Our Journey
Our first academic offering was a Ministerial Diploma programme, a three-year curriculum condensed into two calendar years, to meet the urgent need for trained pastors. Over the years, we expanded our offerings to include three-year diploma programmes in Christian Education and Sacred Music and a two-year programme in Churchmanship.
In 1957, we formed an Area Board and became an official school for Trinidad, Guyana, and Barbados. As the Church of the Nazarene expanded in the West Indies, we welcomed students from other countries and districts.
Our Growth
In 1964, we adopted our college motto, “Our Utmost for His Highest,” inspired by a book written by Oswald Chambers. A decade later, in 1974, we evolved into the Caribbean Nazarene Theological College (CNTC) and granted our first Bachelor of Theology degree through an affiliation with Canadian Nazarene College. By 1987, our Area Board transitioned into the Board of Trustees.
Our Achievements
We achieved a significant milestone in 1996 when the Caribbean Evangelical Theological Association accredited us, enabling us to grant degrees independently. Our academic offerings grew to include Bachelor’s degrees in Theology and Christian Education and Diplomas in Theology and Christian Education. With the turn of the new millennium, we continued to advance by adding the Master of Arts in Counselling programme in 2000 and the Bachelor of Arts in General Studies in 2001.
Our Evolution
In 2005, we embraced our current name, Caribbean Nazarene College. In 2007,we added Social Work to our programme list. In 2013, we earned accreditation from the Accreditation Council of Trinidad and Tobago, further cementing our commitment to providing quality education. We continued to press further in our offerings with a Master of Arts in Social Work added in 2014 and having the programme for the Masters of Arts in Counselling move to a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology in 2024.
Our Aspirations
From its inception, CNC has been a training ground centred around the holistic transformation of its attendees. Over the years, we have nurtured the development of many leaders across the Caribbean region who have gone on to have an impact locally, regionally, and internationally. We aspire to keep pressing forward in this same vein where transformation and leadership remain in our sights as we head towards becoming the Caribbean Nazarene University.
Our Invitation
We invite you to join us on this journey of faith, learning, community, and transformation as we provide quality holistic higher education and develop Shepherd-Leaders for the church and corporate sector from a biblical worldview.
